The American International Recruitment Council has issued a set of standards seeking to “guide higher education institutions in developing and managing all aspects of international student enrolment”.
The International Enrollment Management standards comprise five major international enrolment management areas: Mission and Goals; Institutional Effectiveness; Marketing and Recruitment; Admissions and Enrolment; and Student Wellbeing and Services.
“These IEM Standards should be an integral part of all institutions of higher education’s comprehensive campus internationalisation efforts,” said chair of the AIRC IEM Standards Working Group and associate vice president and senior international officer at California State University Long Beach, Jeet Joshee.
“The standards not only focus on student recruitment strategies, but also address the broad issues of global diversity and inclusion.”
Developed over the past year by AIRC Working Group, AIRC says the standards can be used as part of a formal review process, in addition to internal use for staff training, professional development and continuous improvement of international enrolment management.
Questions in the document are designed to stimulate broad, critical thinking and elicit robust responses from institutions.
“AIRC issues these standards to help guide quality international enrolment management at all types of higher education institutions”
They cover issues around relationships with agencies and service providers, diversity, equity and inclusion, effective international support and integration, environmental sustainability, credential evaluation, among many others.
“As a Standards Development Organization, AIRC issues these standards to help guide quality international enrolment management at all types of higher education institutions,” AIRC president Sophia Iliakis-Doherty added.
“These standards are a culmination of years of knowledge and experience from seasoned international education professionals. We believe they will further identify AIRC as a leader in international student recruitment and hopefully steer more agencies and institutions in our direction.”
AIRC is also developing a toolbox of best practices to meet the standards, in addition to running specialist workshops – such as at AIRC’s 14th Annual Conference in Los Angeles in December.
