The scholarship was coordinated by the Education Support Project of the church.
Speaking at the Ilupeju Senior Secondary School, where scholarships were given to the undergraduates, the Senior Pastor of the church, Pastor Taiwo Odukoya, said since 2002, the church had taken it upon itself to impact positively the six government-owned secondary schools in Ilupeju where it is based.
Also, some retired school principals and teachers were rewarded for their efforts in molding future leaders in their care.
Odukoya, who was represented by Pastor Omotayo Kujore, said the awards and recognitions were given without regard to religion or any other factor than merit.
The special event for students in Senior Secondary School Three, titled, ‘Achieve and attain,’ which took place on the assembly, educated the students on the importance of choosing the right career for a successful future. They were also taught soft skills that would help them excel in life.
Pastor Kujore said, “When the church started about 30 years ago, we have been involved in the social motivation of the people of Ilupeju. We have sunk over 10 boreholes, our hospital is for people in the community and we have a multi-purpose credit society for the financial empowerment and independence of the people.
“Our intervention in public secondary schools in Ilupeju is to assist the government to make sure that the schools rank among the best in the state. We have also committed over N10m to providing teaching and learning facilities in the schools.’’
Also speaking, the Head of the Education Support Project, Mrs Elizabeth Ademoye, added that as long as the beneficiaries of the scholarship awards were able to maintain a 3.5 CGPA, they would be supported throughout their studies.
Each of the 14 beneficiaries was given N120,000, 12 teachers who were given merit awards got a plaque and N20, 000 and seven retired principals also got a plaque and N25, 000 each.
