The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) in Kaduna Polytechnic, has tasked the newly appointed Rector of the Institution, Dr. Suleiman Umar to work towards the actualization of the conversion of the institution to a university.
Making the call on Wednesday in an acceptance speech after emerging the new ASUP Chairman, Abubakar Abdullahi noted that aside from the infrastructure development, the conversion of Kaduna Polytechnic to a University is key to its revolution.
He assured that ASUP as a labour union under his leadership, would alongside the protection of its members’ rights, ensure that Kaduna Polytechnic is well positioned to achieve greater heights.
Abdullahi also asked the Polytechnic’s management to work towards the revival of staff development policy, provision of a conducive learning environment for staff and students, the revival of staff industrial training (SITCOM) for academic staff, as well as payment of outstanding allowances and arrears, as well as ensuring a realistic academic calendar for both regular and evening programmes.
The new chairman said having been given the responsibility of steering the affairs of the union, their mandates as labour leaders is to ensure the continuous protection of the interest of members and also to ensure that the institution is well positioned to achieve greater heights.
Speaking to the Rector, the new ASUP leader explained, “We shall defend the interest of our members and the system. Sir, all we ask is justice, Do justice to all and sundry. Power can remain in the hands of infidels if he is just and fair but it will not remain in the hands of a believer if he or she is unfair and unjust.”
He stated that behind every crisis anywhere in the world is injustice and the solution to that crisis is justice, saying that the world itself cannot be governed by force, never by fear or even by power, in the end as what governs is the mind, what conquered is the spirit and the weapon of governing the mind and conquering the spirit are justice and fair play.
He said all hands must on deck to actualize the conversion of Kaduna Polytechnic to a University, revive staff development, provide a conducive learning environment for staff and students through the provision of free Internet facilities and revival of staff industrial training (SITCOM) for Academic staff.
