Bashir Jamoh, the Director-General of Nigerians Maritime Administration and Safety Agency has said the Blue economy offers Nigeria the opportunity of 350 million jobs if adequately harnessed.
He lamented that the sector had been underutilized in Nigeria, describing the situation as ‘sea-blindness’.
Jamoh disclosed this on Monday during a Channels Television interview.
He called on the federal government to tap the overwhelming opportunities in the blue economy.
According to him, the fishery industry alone and its value are enough to boost the country’s frail economy.
He said, “So, it is left for every country to stimulate what they can maximize from the 350 million jobs in the blue economy alone.
“If you take fishing, you take wind energy; now we are having a problem with energy; if you take wind energy, it is underutilized.”
Blue Economy is the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth and development, according to the World Bank.
