Less than two weeks to Christmas, residents of Kaduna State are lamenting the burden of daily hikes in the price of foodstuff and transport fare in the state.

A cross-section of Kaduna residents who spoke to DAILY POST on Thursday expressed worries over the rising cost of foodstuff and hoped for miracles in stemming the tide of looming austerity.

Pastor Suleiman Ayuba, the resident pastor of ECWA Church, Rigasa, blamed insecurity, unemployment and other factors for this year’s lean harvest.

Another respondent, Madam Rose Abraham expressed bitterness that barely two weeks to Christmas she has not sewn new dresses for any of her children.

Mrs Justina Momoh, a Birnin Gwari resident told DAILY POST the fear of bandits frustrates farmers from going to farm, while Dr Moses Musa, who lives in Chikun LGA, attributed the rising cost of foodstuff to several factors.

According to him, fuel scarcity across the country is a great challenge.

“If you go to my village now, with N5, 000, you will buy enough yam. But, you will still spend N200, 000 to convey the same yam to Kaduna because of fuel scarcity,” he said.

He called on the federal government to ease transportation worries before the Yuletide.

Madam Aisha Abdullahi, another respondent, also agreed that fuel scarcity is affecting the rising cost of foodstuff, which is now a growing problem for everyone and not just a particular region.

She argued that both Christians and Muslims buy foodstuff from the same market, therefore security agents and the Federal Government should urgently intervene and ensure the availability of fuel across the country.

“If there is fuel across the country, there would be enough foodstuff, because market women would transport them at reasonable cost to market,” she said.
