As an international student, working without a work permit in Canada is only possible if you are a full-time student (Students who choose full-time) in any designated learning institution in Canada.

With your Canada study permit as an international student, you can easily work for any employer in Canada whether on Campus or off-campus. There are lots of advantages of studying and working in Canada; and while supporting yourself financially is one of them, others include:

  • You can easily be retained at your workplace even after completing your study in Canada.
  • You can easily become a permanent resident in Canada after completing your studies.
  • You’ll obtain quality education and work experience which you can use to apply for other job opportunities in Canada.

Whether your original intentions were to come and work in Canada or not, while applying for a Canada study permit, you have to prove that you have enough money to take care of yourself while you study in Canada.

Note that the money you intend to make in the future while studying and working in Canada does not count when demonstrating that you’re financially buoyant to take care of yourself in Canada.

How To Study and Work in Canada in 2022

Step 1: Choose your Desired Course and Institution

Choosing your desired course and institution is the first step to studying in Canada. While choosing an institution in Canada, ensure it’s a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada, because only Canadian DLIs can admit international students.

Step 2: Try To Meet The Requirements

Try to understand and fulfil the different requirements for your desired course and institution. Also, try to understand the various regulation and rules applicable to the study permit application process.

Step 3: Carry Out the Language Proficiency Test

For international students to be able to study in Canada, they are required to take the Language Proficiency Test (IELTS, TOEFL or TEF) – To prove their proficiency in French or English.

Step 4: Apply to Universities

After deciding on the course you want to study and making a list of designated Learning Institutions in Canada that offer it, it’s time to apply to the Universities.

Try to obtain their various application packs, and then submit them appropriately in advance. Application fees for different universities in Canada can be around $100 to $250.

After applying to the university of your choice by filling out their application form with accurate information supported with documentary evidence, it’s time to wait till you receive your acceptance letter.

Step 5: Apply for a Canadian Study Permit

Once you receive your acceptance letter from your desired Canadian Designated Learning Institution, it’s time to use the letter to apply for a study permit. You can apply for a study permit online or by visiting any local visa application centre near you.

Document required includes your acceptance letter, your passport, (IELTS, TOEFL or TEF), and documentary proof that you have enough finances to study in Canada. Requirements may vary between institutions and provinces.

NOTE: Your study permit will contain a statement that shows whether you can work in Canada while studying or not. If you are allowed, then you can apply for the Social Insurance Number (SIN) which allows you to work while studying in Canada. Always ask questions when you get confused.

Step 6: Time To Travel

Once your application is processed and an interview (if required) carried out, it’s now up to the immigration officer to decide upon your study permit application. If you’re accepted, then it’s time to prepare to move into Canada to study and work.

NOTE: There will be a start date on your study permit. That date is when your study permit becomes valid and you can’t enter Canada until that date.

Step 7: Time to Work and Study!

Once you get to Canada, at the Point Of Entry (POE), the immigration officer will verify your study permit and other documents before letting you enter Canada to study and work.

Places You Can Work While Studying In Canada

On-Campus: Working for any employer within the Campus. E.g, working for your faculty member, your university or college, or working for yourself within the campus, etc.

Off-Campus: You are allowed to work outside the campus for any employer. E.g, working in a restaurant, gym, bar, club, or company outside the campus.

Reasons You May Not Be Allowed To Work in Canada While Studying

  • If your study program is less than 6 months
  • If you enrol without making either English or French your first Language.
  • etc.
